Design Spotlight: Create Your Dream Cooking Nook

In today’s Design Spotlight, we’ll deconstruct the elements of design and functionality that make for a great cooking area. We’ll focus on a few of our past remodels and the small but impactful details that make these cooking nooks standout features of any dream kitchen.

All photos feature remodels designed and completed by BA Kitchen & Bath Design with countertop supply, fabrication, and installation provided by our sister company next door BA Stone Surfaces. Have a project idea? Get started on an estimate.

Symmetry & Storage

With the stainless steel range as the center of gravity, we added tall, custom cabinetry around it, maintaining a sense of symmetry for clean design. Everything you need for a cooking area is within arm’s reach, including two large built-in pantries on the outer ends, storage drawers and cabinets, and even pull-out spice racks on either side of the range.

If you’re working with a tighter or more challenging shaped space, consider adding stackers for additional storage. They go above your cabinets, visually elongate the space, and are great for storing more seasonal items.

Food Prep Space

Countertops on either side of the range provide ample space for food prep, although we always maximize additional countertop space on the surround as well as via kitchen islands and peninsulas. Quartz is particularly suited for kitchen applications as it is durable and stain, scratch, and bacteria-resistant. Add tile over the range for an unexpected contrast in texture or opt for a matching quartz backsplash for a more modern, seamless look. Plus no grout lines means it’s easy to clean.

Lighting & Finishing Details

We love incorporating under-cabinet lighting in the cooking area. It serves as functional task lighting for meal prep and other tasks. The resulting ambiance also showcases your range and hood vent, countertops, and cabinetry for their visual appeal.

Add finishing touches that reflect other elements of your kitchen, pulling everything together for one cohesive look. Consider a chic and functional pot filler over the range and match the finish to your faucet and cabinet hardware. Match your hood vent to your appliances or add molding or accent trim to match the windows and cabinetry. You can even go for an all-wood look to emphasize your flooring and exposed beams.
